Turkey, the Union and the Netherlands

From the 1st of July 2004, the Netherlands have held the presidency of the European Union. During this period of presidency, in December 2004, a date will have to be set for Turkey’s accession as a full member of the Union. By previous treaties since 1963, the Union has committed itself to this accession. In later treaties these conditions for accession have been regulated in more detail.

The book will demonstrate in a legal fashion that the Union has already committed itself unconditionally to accept this accession, subject to exceptional new facts. It will be explained that even when a date will have been set, this does not mean that the Union will admit Turkey naturally to the economic and monetary “power block” forming the Union as a legal community.
